Marin Alsop is a prominent role model for women conductors. She starts her inaugural season as the new Chief Conductor of the RSO Wien – and as the first female principle conductor of a large symphony orchestra in Austria – with two concerts on October 24 and 31, 2019. On this occasion, mdw, RSO Wien, Wien Modern and Wiener Konzerthaus team up for a series of career lectures, master class with Marin Alsop for female conductors and a panel discussion about gender equality in music. While 55% of the current students at mdw are women, especially domains like composing and conducting are still far from gender equality. What facilitates the careers of women conductors and women composers? What is pulling the brakes? Which cultural policy measures such as a gender quota could actually help? How can we arrive at equal rights and opportunities for female musicians, composers and conductors in cultural institutions and associations?
