Mark Andre unlocks spaces. Breathtaking interspaces that open up when you being to detect the most refined differences. His music renders these differences audible in themselves; he refrains from providing analytical pointers, but refers instead to metaphysics, which is more important to him. But in order to illustrate the microscopically precise degree of refinement of his music, let’s zoom in really close here on a tiny detail of the compositional technique of his major work for solo piano, iv 1:»The category of harmonic« for example, which comes into focus with the use of the inside of the piano, is subdivided by the composer first into »polarities, two concepts from the same category« – harmonic and disharmonic. Between these newly discovered poles, a gradual play opens up with the most subtle of tonal possibilities. It is in these nano regions that Mark Andre’s music plays – where a sound barely perceptibly begins to change from harmonic to disharmonic, from stable to unstable, from the closed to the perforated. Four musicians who are best acquainted with Mark Andre’s spectacular microscopic landscapes perform three of his tiny, gigantic solo and chamber music pieces in the Reaktor.
»We know from astrophysics that there is no such thing as absolute silence. Since the Big Bang, we can observe noise everywhere. But I think that if something is too loud there is no room for intensity. Intensity lies in the fading away, in the final stage before fading away.« (Mark Andre)
»What I’m interested in is music in the process of disappearing, of vanishing and afterwards. I’m looking for what remains after it has gone, what continues to exist perceptibly, when we use our possibilities and our sensorium and allow ourselves to be courageously open and vulnerable to it.« (Mark Andre)
