Salon Souterrain: Growth III

For Wien Modern, the Ensemble Kontrapunkte is going underground. And not only for two whole nights in the new Sonnwend quarter next to the Main Station (08./09.11.), but also at its previous headquarters in the First District – of all places. The reason for this was the transformational encounter of the ensemble, set up in 1965, with the Salon Souterrain, a format of the underground art space, Chateau Rouge that opened in 2018. Behind it are the Congolese-French performance artist Elisabeth Bakambamba Tambwe, who has been causing a stir in Vienna for some time now, and Canadian Lena Fankhauser, viola player with the Koehne Quartet and co-founder of the association for new chamber music, (CH)AMBER. In reaction to the current trend towards social exclusion in European society, Salon Souterrain defines itself explicitly as a place where everyone is welcome, a melting pot for people. styles and ideas, as well as an open platform for all cultures and systematic dialogue. Whichever writers, philosophers, activists and/or scientists choose to take part in one of the three evenings to discuss the festival theme of growth is one of the surprises that account for the unconventional charm of the Salon Souterrain. Growth and change are also the themes of Ensemble Kontrapunkte's first collaboration with two young conductors from Marin Alsop’s masterclasses (01.–03.11.).
