The young Vienna-based duo schtum similarly devises its abstract sounds for exciting venues. Manu Mayr and Robert Pockfuß have three years of sound and balance research behind them, an innate sense for the experimental distortion of analogue effect pedals, as well as performances at the Berghain in Berlin, the Danube Festival and at Sonic Protest in Paris. «Microtonal distortion and feedback into dark, frequently brutal electronic sequences» are tempered by the laidback use of electrical stringed instruments.
»The sound of a crashing wave or a collapsing building isn’t necessarily aggressive just because it’s loud. Its effect is simply very powerful. We don’t shout into people’s faces, but hum relatively intensely into their ear.« (schtum)
