The loops that Austrian composer Bernhard Lang has dreamed up for his music theatre piece on Arthur Schnitzler’s »Der Reigen« oscillate between »desperate comedy, erotic obsession and depressive compulsive behavior.“ The play, which scandalized Berlin and Vienna in 1920/1921 and was also the object of a court case, brings together 10 couples in a long, round dance of short-lived sexual encounters – a subject that positions itself „gaily, as well as with its eternal opposite to so-called morality« as Schnitzler’s mistress Adele Sandrock once put it. Bernhard Lang takes quotations from Berg, Debussy, Lou Reed, Duke Ellington and Japanese Otaku dances, and, using a wide palette of color, from orchestral to jazz and even rap music, forms them into an entertaining piece of music theatre, his ninth. Following performances in Schwetzingen and Bregenz, Neue Oper Wien is now bringing it to Vienna for the first time. Director Alexandra Liedtke »takes up, as does Lang in his music, Schnitzler’s biting irony – a wonderfully comic element amid all of those desolate encounters[…] Electrifying, richly colorful music, a sparkling and coherent staging and a superb ensemble – what more could you want for the premiere run. Arthur Schnitzler’s once scandalous play Reigen is, as a piece of music theatre by Bernhard Lang, another highlight of the Bregenz Festival.« (ORF.at following the first performance of this new production in July 2019)
