Abschiedskonzert die reihe
Sunday, 03. November 2019, 16:00
That there is an audience at all who love new music in 21st century Vienna is due, not least, to an initiative that began to flourish in the then »desert« over 60 years ago: in 1958, Friedrich Cerha and Kurt Schwertsik (aged 32 and 23 at the time) set up an ensemble called die reihe. The »before« and »after« effect for Vienna can only be intimated here – the works chosen for this program by Varèse, Webern and Weill all received their first post-war performances in Vienna by die reihe. An extensive retrospective, as well as talks with both founders and subsequent directors, HK Gruber and Christian Muthspiel, provide an opportunity to take stock of the many different impulses. The occasion is the ensemble's historic decision to bid farewell to its audience. An opportunity to say thank you, to look back and also look to the future, as well as to provide some first-hand tips for today's 32- and 23-year-olds as to how artistic initiatives can change the world.
