Eröffnungskonzert Wien Modern
Thursday, 31. October 2019, 19:30
In 2019, Wien Modern endeavors, via musical means, to reclaim the concept of growth from the rigid definition it has taken on from its constant use in economics, urban planning and politics. And what better way than to open the festival than with a volcanic explosion? Icelandic composer Jón Leifs has turned the shattering event that the massive huge eruption of the Hekla volcano in 1947/1948 was into one of the loudest orchestral pieces of all time. In his staggering Sinfonia from 1958, Luciano Berio goes to the very heart of the question as to how dense an orchestral work can be. Similarly, the new pieces on the program also explore the art of finding just the right balance: taking his inspiration from Gerhard Richter's »8 Grau« series of painting, Peter Ablinger buries a dense orchestral network under strata of white noise. Using cassette recorders, kazoos and other unusual sound originators, Clara Iannotta carefully closes in on the limits of audibility. By contrast, Agata Zubel, winner of the Erste Bank Composition Prize 2018, ignites a veritable fireworks.
