It won’t be the first time, but it will still be an historic occasion: Vienna’s most venerable orchestra, in line with the motto of this year’s festival (Security), will open Wien Modern 2018 with an entire concert without a conductor – music needs the courage to take risks. The concert will begin with the notorious »silent piece« »4'33''« by avant-garde pioneer John Cage. In his late work »Sixty-Eight«, all 68 musicians decide for themselves when to begin and finish playing their parts. A piece that the orchestra and its leader, Rainer Honeck, have also carefully selected for this occasion is a real Viennese masterpiece: Arnold Schoenberg’s »Transfigured Night« for strings. Finally, in this remarkable matinee concert, the Vienna Philharmonic will give the world premiere of a piece composed especially for them: »Scattered Light« by Innsbruck-born Johannes Maria Staud. A very special loveletter to a very special orchestra, it is a piece without a conductor and is being performed shortly before the premiere of Staud’s new piece of music theatre, »Die Weiden«, at the Vienna State Opera.
