The panic that the eponymous piece by »eminence grise« Harrison Birtwistle sparked at the Last Night of the Proms in London in 1995 has long been replaced by enthusiasm. But here the Vienna Symphony Orchestra promises to be in scorching form under star conductor Sylvain Cambreling when they perform a graphic masterpiece by Iannis Xenakis. In the world premiere of Julia Purgina’s »Akatalepsia« (the Greek word meaning the incomprehensibility of all things), the orchestra’s leader ends up on the balcony. Malte Giesen brings a hyper-real piano on stage. And just before his 83rd birthday, that magician of noise, Helmut Lachenmann, will take great pleasure in subverting expectations with his first piece that could happily be played at Vienna’s New Year’s Day concert ...
